As usual, we drove through the center of the state on our way back home yesterday. This area is very rural and is notable largely for the large number of prisons located within it. As you would expect, it is Trump country.
In previous years, we noted a substantial number of Trump signs along the way. This year, we saw very few. What does that mean?
I think it means that even the base has taken the measure of the man and is unenthusiastic about his candidacy. It will vote for him to spite the left and to, as it sees it, bring back the economy of 2019, not because it thinks he’s a great guy with an inspiring vision for the country.
In other words, the relationship between Trump and the base has become more transactional. What happens if he doesn’t deliver after he wins the election? That will be interesting, to say the least.
